A SPECIAL REPORT: Celebrating Mother's Day

Mother’s Day originated from humble beginnings in 1908 as a simple tradition to honour all mothers, living and deceased. However, it did not take long for florists, confectioners and card companies to jump onboard and commercialise the day, much to the disappointment of its founder, Ann Jarvis.

Mother’s Day is a good annual reminder to say thanks to the mums and other special carers who play an important role in our lives, but it is essential we mark the day with love and sincerity. This year is especially important due to the recent pandemic, where mothers played multiple roles over recent months providing care and support to those they love under difficult circumstances. Mothers will often put the needs of others above their own, so it is paramount to remind them to take care of themselves also, especially when it comes to mental health.

Research has shown that women experience some mental health conditions more so than men and at much higher rates. There are many factors that can impact a woman’s wellbeing physically and emotionally. Seeking effective treatment can enable her to engage more readily in everyday activities and fulfil the needs of her children and family.

This Special Report highlights the role mothers play in the developmental growth of her children and the importance of self-care for good mental health.

      Chappie's Words of Wisdom....

Some mantras to teach your children... and remind yourself of as well
Quoted from a book by AnnMarie Skinner - Life with rough edges.

      1. God dreamt you up! He designed you... there is no one else on the planet like you and God has a special plan for your life! Jeremiah 29:11....to give you a hope and a future.
      2. You don't have to BE the best, just DO your best! Phillipians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.
      3. Success is about your PB -Personal Best! Compare yourself to your abilities not to someone else's. 1 Corinthians 13:4 Love does not envy, it does not boast...
4 "I love you forever, no matter what!" (Especially in the midst of their mistakes!Jeremiah 31:3 I have loved you with an everlasting love
      5. Kindness is your superpower! 1 Corinthians 13:4 Love is patient, Love is kind...
See you about our Great School. St Colman's.
      Best Wishes,

Social and Emotional Learning at St Colman's School

Social and Emotional Learning refers to the development of self-awareness, self control, self regulation, social skills and responsible decision making, all of which are essential for school life and success.

The feeling spots help the students to identify actions and skills that inspire and motivate them.  Students learn how to develop self control, a positive outlook, perseverance, and creative problem solving skills for everyday tasks. Each day we check in by spotting our feelings and grabbing the appropriate spot from the display wall.

During our morning session we sing a song about how feelings need feelings and discuss what we picked and why.  We further discuss what other feelings could help us to change our emotion if we are feeling sad, angry or nervous because feelings and emotions motivate actions.  For example when a child learns how they are feeling they can also understand how their feelings are tied to their actions. If a child knows what sadness is and can recognise sadness in others, it can motivate the child to try and help if they see sadness present in another fellow student and provide love and care.  If a child is feeling frustration and their first reaction is to yell, once they learn how to manage their frustration, they can begin to control their response.

The implementation of this daily check in has not only improved their knowledge of different emotions, it has also given them the oral language needed to be able to express their feelings in a supportive, controlled manner.

      Parent Volunteers

St Colman's School is committed to ensuring that our school is safe for our students. Each year, TCE ensures that all staff receive training in student protection.  It is also important that our volunteers receive adequate training before volunteering in our schools.  Thank you to those parents who have already completed this.  To complete the training please go to the following link :

      God of our lives,

How we long for our world and our hearts to grow:

To grow in faith, understanding, and questions.
To grow in our hope for a better world.
To grow further and wider instead of apart.
      To grow our lives together.
To grow in love for each other.

May growth be our hope while you are our ultimate guide.

God, we ask that you may grow into the lives of all of those around the world who need it.
May your peace grow where there is no peace.
May your love grow in the places where it feels far away.

Grow in us new faith in you, as we hold onto each other and to your abiding love.

      In your name, we pray.

      Amen.
