St Colman’s School will be entering the Burdekin’s Sweetest School Competition but we are also having a competition for who’s class can grow the best cane!  If you would like to to help your child’s class be the champion St Colman’s Cane Growers Class - please contact Mrs Keys or Mrs Gibson.

CANEGROWERS Burdekin is excited to launch the Burdekin’s Sweetest School Competition in collaboration with Burdekin Productivity Services (BPS), Sugar Research Australia (SRA), and the Sweet Days Hot Nights Festival. This competition is a new associated event of the festival and aims to foster a hands-on learning experience, promote environmental awareness, and build a deeper understanding of the farming process.

Background: Burdekin's Sweetest School Competition is a unique opportunity where schools can showcase their skills in growing the best sugarcane. This competition provides an opportunity for students to learn about the intricacies of sugarcane cultivation, sustainable farming practices, and the importance of the sugarcane industry to the local economy. Schools have the chance to not only compete for recognition but also to cultivate a passion for agriculture and sustainable practices among the younger generation.

Competition Overview: Participating schools will be given sugar cane billets to plant and nurture for twelve months, with industry experts judging the best cane produced. CANEGROWERS Burdekin, Burdekin Productivity Services (BPS), Sugar Research Australia (SRA) and Sweet Days Hot Nights Festival representatives will visit each school during April 2024 to provide the school with a billet of cane to plant, and give guidance on how to grow sugarcane. The competition will conclude with BPS judging the best cane with categories of longest stick, most sugarcane produced and highest CSS.  The overall winner will take home the trophy and cash prize of $1,000 sponsored by CANEGROWERS Burdekin.  Each school can plant multiple plots if they wish to create a class competition within the school, however, each primary and secondary school may only submit one cane entry to be judged for the competition.

School’s Commitment: The only commitment from the school is to allocate a small area of land about 1m x 1m and student representatives to water the billet over the 12 months of the competition.

      Home Reading

Reading every night is very important for your child’s education and at St Colman’s School we encourage you to read every night and record this in their Reading Diary which every child has. Reading with your child can:

      Build concentration. ...

      Improve memory. ...

      Teach about the world. ...

      Develop empathy. ...

      Expand vocabulary. ...

      Boost critical thinking. ...

      Help build positive self-image. ...

      Better performance in school

Awards are given to each child that achieves 25, 50, 75 nights of reading at assembly.

At 100 nights of reading each student is given the opportunity to choose a book to keep from Mrs Keys’ special book box. Please take the time to sit down and read with your child. If your child has misplaced their reading bag please contact your class teacher.

In this edition of SchoolTV - NEURODIVERSITY

Neurodiversity emphasises the natural variation in how an individual's brain functions and how they perceive and interact with the world, leading to diverse ways of learning and communicating. While most young people are neurotypical, some exhibit variations in brain development, such as ADHD, autism or dyslexia, making them neurodivergent.

Embracing neurodiversity involves accepting, celebrating, and supporting neurodivergent children and adolescents without attempting to change or treat their differences. Using respectful language, challenging unhelpful attitudes, avoiding assumptions, and actively promoting inclusivity can help embrace neurodiversity effectively.

Acknowledging the unique ways neurodiverse young people do things and then adapting tasks and activities to ensure their full participation will encourage them to develop strategies that feel natural to them. It will help improve their mental health, wellbeing and sense of self. By recognising and nurturing their strengths, parents and caregivers can contribute to building an inclusive and compassionate society where all young people can thrive.

Learning more about neurodiversity, equips caregivers with insights into effective communication techniques, educational strategies, and parenting approaches tailored to the specific needs of their neurodivergent child.
