Principal & Teaching and Learning Update
Term 2 is proving to be very busy.
The teachers are continuing their focus on reading. Every morning at 9am each class has a Guided Reading session. Guided reading is a small group session where the teacher helps students use reading strategies whilst reading for meaning independently. Guided reading allows students to practice and consolidate effective reading strategies. We have already seen improvements in reading levels due to these sessions.
Minilit and Maclit sessions are also helping those students who find reading slightly difficult at times. Last week I sat in on numerous sessions run by Venera Pont and Bernie Boccalatte. The program provides explicit instruction in phonemic awareness, systematic synthetic phonics for reading and spelling, letter formation, and connected text reading. The students are gaining confidence in different reading strategies in small group intensive learning sessions. It was wonderful to hear them read more confidently using various techniques to solve unknown words.

NAPLAN
Naplan starts next week. The students have been preparing for Naplan over the year and are ready for the challenges ahead. Last week Dr Judy Smeed (Queensland University of Technology) came to view some of the work St Colman's School has undertaken to prepare the students for Naplan. She was extremely impressed with the improvements she saw in our students' writing and vocabulary they are using in their writing. Well done.
