Principal & Teaching and Learning Update

Term 2 is proving to be very busy.

The teachers are continuing their focus on reading. Every morning at 9am each class has a Guided Reading session. Guided reading is a small group session where the teacher helps students use reading strategies whilst reading for meaning independently. Guided reading allows students to practice and consolidate effective reading strategies. We have already seen improvements in reading levels due to these sessions.

Minilit and Maclit sessions are also helping those students who find reading slightly difficult at times. Last week I sat in on numerous sessions run by Venera Pont and Bernie Boccalatte. The program provides explicit instruction in phonemic awareness, systematic synthetic phonics for reading and spelling, letter formation, and connected text reading. The students are gaining confidence in different reading strategies in small group intensive learning sessions. It was wonderful to hear them read more confidently using various techniques to solve unknown words.

Prep Enrolment 2023

NAPLAN

Naplan starts next week.  The students have been preparing for Naplan over the year and are ready for the challenges ahead. Last week Dr Judy Smeed (Queensland University of Technology) came to view some of the work St Colman's School has undertaken to prepare the students for Naplan. She was extremely impressed with the improvements she saw in our students' writing and vocabulary they are using in their writing. Well done.

Three Way Conference

Thank you very much to all the students, teachers and parents for Three Way Conferences last week. We have so far heard some wonderful feedback on how positive these meetings were. Many parents commented it was a great opportunity to be a part of their child's education and help them set goals for the future.  If any one has missed out on making an appointment please contact the office to arrange a time. Any feedback on these meetings is greatly appreciated.

ANZAC Day

Thank you to all those students who represented our school at the Dawn and Morning March. It is wonderful to see the youth of our day taking up the challenge to remeber the brave sacrifices that others have taken for our coutnry. Lest we forget.

Chaplain's Corner

Congratulations to our Mini Vinnies group who opened their Community Pantry yesterday. We thank BCA (Burdekin Community Association) Ayr and St Vincent De Paul for helping the school achieve this wonderful social outreach to our community.  We also thank Coles and Home HIll Bakery who are donating food.

If any members of our local community have fruit trees, vegetable gardens or farms we ask for donations to be made at the School office for distribution to the community on Tuesday mornings.  Our children will be involved in setting up the stand and wheeling it in and out on collection days

Let’s help members of our Home Hill community!
