Principal & Teaching and Learning Update

As the term draws to an end I would like to thank everyone for their support over a very different term. Although we "missed '' two weeks of learning time the students and teachers have been working extremely hard to improve learning at St Colman's School.

It has been a very busy term for the teachers and support officers introducing a new spelling program - SMART Spelling, Minilit and Maclit, a new Home Reading program, a dedicated Guided Reading time, WOW (Work on Writing) time and many more things. I thank them for all their hard work and enthusiasm to improve the teaching and learning cycle.

I look forward to another busy term of learning in Term 2.

You are invited to the  presentation

of

St Colman's School Validation Certificate

Tuesday 29th March at 10.00am  in the Shed

Followed by Morning Tea

The Director of Townsville Catholic Education Mrs Jacqui Francis will be presenting the certificate.

CSP - Catholic School Parents

On behalf of the school community I would like to thank Mrs Kalah Totorica who has been the president of the CSP for numerous years. Kalah has lead the committee during her time with great enthusiasm and knowledge. The committee has raised a large amount of funds for the school through the debutante balls and other fundraising events under Kalah's leadership. I thank her for years of service.

Thank you to those who attended the AGM on Monday night. The following positions have been filled:

President : Genieveve Smith

Vice President : Laura Leissmann

Secretary : Kristy Lea Derlargen

The next meeting will be on Monday 16th May. It was decided to try an earlier time of 5.30pm to encourage more parents to attend. Children are welcome to come and play whilst we are meeting.

NAPLAN

This Thursday at 10.00 am, all students in Years Three and Five will participate in the Coordinated Practice Test. This is a nationally coordinated test to ensure the internet can meet the demands of concentrated online use during the May NAPLAN tests.

Thursday’s test will be an Omnibus test which consists of questions on Language Conventions, Reading and Numeracy. The students will also complete a Writing task online Year 5) and Year 3 will complete the Writing test on paper. These tests will familiarise students with the test environment and the online tools they will be using during the MAY tests.

Year 3/4 Technology - Building a better Burdekin Bridge

In Design Technology, Year 3/4 students analysed the positive and negative features of the Burdekin bridge. Students were then given the task of re-designing a new bridge which would eliminate these constraints. Students were given modelling clay to replicate bitchumen, aluminium foil for steel, paddle pop sticks for barriers and lego blocks for cement. Students created some fantastic models of their new bridge and reflected at the end whether they had met the brief or not.

Prep Assembly - Tomorrow  Thursday 24th March at 2.15pm in the Shed

Yr 5/6 Assembly - Next Thursday 31st March at 2.15pm in the Shed
