Principal & Teaching and Learning Update

Dear parents,

As we draw to a close for Term 2 St Colman’s has been very fortunate to have some new families join us. Due to this we will be having to change the classroom structure of Year 3/4 & Year ⅚ from Term 3 2023. The meeting on Wednesday which all parents are welcome to attend is to explain this positive change for your child. The change in structure at St Colman’s School will enable us to pivot from a current 4 class structure to a hybrid model for educational delivery in Years 3-6. (6 classes)

Students in these year levels will be provided with differentiated instruction in smaller class size groups in English, Maths especially as well as other key learning areas.

Year 3/4 teachers will be for the two classes:

Monday to Friday - Kalah Totorica

Monday- Sharon Keihne

Tuesday - Danielle Zollner

Wednesday to Friday -  Sharon Keihne

Year 5/6 teachers will be for the two classes:

Monday to Friday - Kim Watkins

(Tuesday out for Inclusive education teacher - Jasmine Vass)

Monday/ Tuesday/ Thursday - Kristy Derlagen

Wednesday/ Friday -  Jasmine Vass

Mrs Jasmine Vass will continue to do sport on Thursday

Mrs Linda Fallon will join Year 1/2 on Friday.

Mrs Karen Keys will provide Technology and Visual Arts for all classes.

By these changes class size will be reduced offering each child a quality individualised education. Please contact me if you have any questions about this matter.

Long Service Leave

We wish Mrs Gloria Lazzarini our Italian teacher all the best as she travels off to Italy for a few weeks. She will return in early August.

I (Mrs Karen Keys) will be travelling to Kiribati (an island country in the central Pacific Ocean) to do some flyfishing with my husband in Week 2 - 3 in Term 3.

Semester 1 Reports

Semester 1 Reports will be issued via Compass on Friday 23rd June. For the purposes of reporting students are graded using a 5-point scale. From Year 2 students will receive an A, B, C, D or E grading, however, this scale differs slightly in Prep and Year 1. In Prep and Year 1, the 5-points of the grading scale are as follows:-

Applying (AP) - The child applies the curriculum content and demonstrates a thorough understanding of the required knowledge. The child demonstrates a high level of skill that can be transferred to new situations.

Making Connections (MC) -The child makes connections using the curriculum content and demonstrates a clear understanding of the required knowledge. The child applies a high level of skill in situations familiar to them, and is beginning to transfer skills to new situations.

Working With (WW) - The child can work with the curriculum content and demonstrates understanding of the required knowledge. The child applies skills in situations familiar to them.

Exploring (EX) - The child is exploring the curriculum content and demonstrates understanding of aspects of the required knowledge. The child uses a varying level of skills in situations familiar to them.

Becoming Aware (BA) - The child is becoming aware of the curriculum content and demonstrates a basic understanding of aspects of required knowledge. The child is beginning to use skills in situations familiar to them.

If you have any questions about your child’s report please contact your child’s teacher.

Week 5 Term 3 (Monday 7th - Friday 11th August) Three Way Conferences will be taking place which is a time when goals for your child’s education will be set.

Open Day

A huge thank you to all the community supporters who came and helped make the day a superb event. A special thank you to Donna Sgori and Shalon Gibson who made numerous phone calls and other behind the scenes jobs to make the day so wonderful.

Religious Education News

On June 16th we will celebrate the feast day of Sacred Heart of Jesus. This feast day has a strong emphasis on God’s love and mercy. Statues and pictures often have the “strange” image of Jesus’ heart encircled with a crown of thorns and flames radiating from the heart. This reminds us that Christ’s love is so strong for us.  This feast day has special meaning in the Burdekin as the catholic church in Ayr is called Sacred Heart Church Ayr.

Prayer of Thanksgiving and Praise to the Sacred Heart

Lord, you deserve all honor and praise,
because your love is perfect and your heart sublime.
My heart is filled to overflowing with gratitude
for the many blessings and graces you have bestowed upon me and those
whom I love.
Forever undeserving, may I always be attentive
and never take for granted the gifts of mercy and love
that flow so freely and generously from your Sacred Heart.
Heart of Jesus, I adore you.
Heart of Jesus, I praise you.
Heart of Jesus, I thank you.
Heart of Jesus, I love you forever and always.
Amen.
