Principal & Teaching and Learning Update
Dear parents and friends,
Welcome to Term 2 - another busy term ahead ! I hope everyone had a superb holiday and a restful Easter.
Over the school holidays our new pirate ship playground was completed. The students are enjoying playing on our pirate ship. Please come and have a play on the playground !! This term will also see the beginning of planning and removal of the “Rainbow Playground”( the playground nearest the back fence.) This playground does not meet current Australian standards.
The Townsville Catholic Office will work and help fund the school to remove the playground and replace it. The playground is unable to be put under the Tamarind tree as this does not meet recommendations for playgrounds to be under trees. A shade structure will also need to be placed over the new playground. Watch this space for more information.
Thank you to the CSP who will help the school fund some new decodable readers over the year. Decodable readers are simple books that are written for the beginner reader. They provide the reader with opportunities to develop segmenting and blending skills. Decodable readers encourage children to sound out words using decoding strategies rather than guessing from pictures or predicting from other cues. Our prep students will be using these books and then as they progress into Year 1 and Year 2 literature with more vocabulary and sentence structure is introduced. This change in our reading focus and teaching is to align with the new Australian Curriculum which is being released this year.
We welcome this term Mrs Judy Graham who will be our new Indigenous Education Officer. Judy will be working on Friday with students assisting them in their education and cultural needs. Judy is also an artist and painted the mural on the side of the office. Judy also works at BCHS so has an extensive knowledge of working with students.
